How to become a game designer

If you love video games, you could become a game designer and turn your interest into a job. Here's some useful advice and information.

More or less all of us have played video games from an early age. These probably included Super Mario, football or car-racing games, and role-playing games such as Final Fantasy.

If you still enjoy videogames, you could well change your interest into a proper profession. You might have some of the skills required to become a game designer and develop a new video game.

Becoming a game designer: here’s how to do it

The first thing you need to know is that we don’t have any specific educational courses in UK for becoming a game designer. It’s a relatively new profession, but some countries offer degrees and master’s courses specialising in game design. You need basic skills in web design or programming to enter this field. A computer science degree would therefore be an ideal basis for this particular career.

Another key requisite for a game designer is a good knowledge of statistics and IT language.

In addition to this, you need to be familiar with the dynamics of classic video games in order to get started in your new job and to develop some original ideas! Finding a job as a game designer is not an easy task:  it’s a competitive and fast-growing sector, with many people trying to join the race.

So if you want to become a game designer, our main advice is to continue studying and keep up to date, but above all not to lose heart. Perseverance always reaps rewards!
