Preparing for your Big Skype Interview

Video interviewing is an excellent way to let an employer know how great you are without having to leave the comfort of your home. Get prepared for the all-important Skype interview with these quick tips.

Skype interviews are great fun. You can stay at home, have all of your notes in front of you and show off why you would be a great fit to potential employers. They are a massive win for job seekers.

Video interviewing is a trend that looks like it is here to stay. When you begin your job search, it is pretty likely that you’re going to be invited to do a Skype interview at some point.

Employers love to see how their candidates react to the relatively new medium. Here’s how you can nail your video interview and secure that job.

1. Have A Great Internet Connection

Being in a spotty WiFi zone will not reflect well on you. Have an Ethernet cable to hand or find a friend or family member with a stable internet connection.

Research the Company

Eliminating potential technical difficulties will boost your confidence, and reduces the chance of you getting cut off mid-sentence during the most crucial questions.

2. Who’s Calling Who?

It is usually safe to assume that the employer will call you, but double check with them. That way you can avoid the dreaded feeling that you were meant to call once the clock strikes 3.08 pm.

Oh and don’t forget to check what time zone they will be calling from if they are based in another country.

3. Wear Trousers!

There is a persistent joke on social media that Skype interviews mean that you do not have to wear trousers. It would be pretty embarrassing if you had to get up to adjust your camera or to switch on a light mid-interview.  Always dress appropriately (from head to toe!).

4. Set the Tone

Find a nice quiet spot in the house, ideally, with a neutral background. Place your computer on a stack of books for the optimal height and flattering angles.

Use The Right Background

Practice speaking slowly and clearly in your chosen spot, and record it so that you can get an idea of how the interviewer will hear and see you.

5. Research the Company

Like any other interview, you should research the company, look at their social media profiles and get a feel for how people dress and behave.

It should give you a better idea of how you should dress and conduct yourself in the interview. Take a look at some of the line managers social media profiles and get a feel for how they talk. If in doubt just ask them.

As with any interview, preparation and confidence are the keys to success. If you follow our tips, your Skype interview will be an enjoyable experience. Try to be personable and polite, as if a real person is sitting in front of you, and you will ace it.
