Working in America: How to Find a Job in the USA

Are you thinking of chucking it all in and going to live and work in the USA? It's not such a bad idea, and it's by no means impossible to do.

You just need a willingness to adapt, and sufficient determination to resolve the inevitable problems associated with giving up everything and moving to the other side of the world.

Finding accommodation is certainly one of the first problems you’ll face. Here are some tips to help you find board and lodging in the USA.

How to find a place to live in the USA

Firstly, if you’re particularly fortunate, you might be offered a job by an American company, even before you arrive. If you want this sort of luck, you’d better send your CV off to every possible company and apply for every available position. If they think you’ve got the right credentials, they’ll call you up, and they may even undertake to provide you with board and lodging in the USA.

Alternatively, you could start by finding a job as an au pair. Then you would be staying with the family where you work, and they would provide you with bed and board in return for your services in the home.

Then there’s the classic way of finding accommodation in the US: taking the patient approach. Leave home with some savings, maybe some you’ve set aside doing part time work and which you can then use to rent a place in the USA.

Once you’ve settled in, you can start looking for a job that will allow you to live in the United States. If you can’t find a proper home at once, don’t worry; rent a room (maybe on Airbnb) and start looking for work from there. This is also a good way to get to know people, and one of your new friends may even be able to help you find reasonably priced accommodation in the USA.
