How to Focus At Work: 3 Effective Techniques

Let’s be honest: when you return to work after a holiday, or when you’re going through a particularly stressful time at the office, it can be extremely hard to concentrate. Often a lack of concentration is the result of post-holiday stress.

Clearly, these are not the only reasons we may not be able to focus on our job. There are many other factors that can cause us to waste time at work. So here are three techniques to help you concentrate better in the workplace, and to do more in less time!

Techniques to Help You Focus at Work

  1. Have set times for breaks: this may seem like completely the wrong way to achieve our desired result. But that’s not so. During the working day, we are often distracted by an incoming text, email, or Facebook message. That’s perfectly normal, but you can end up wasting a lot of time. Try putting your phone on silent and not looking at Facebook for an hour at a time. After an hour’s work, you can allow yourself a quick break to check your text messages and social media. Then you can return to work for another hour without distractions, and so on. You’ll finish your work much sooner.
  2. If you feel dozy, get up and walk around: boredom and lack of concentration often make one sleepy. Especially after lunch. If this happens, instead of staying put in front of the computer, it’s better to get up and do something physical. Walk up and down, go to the bathroom, go to the coffee-machine for a coffee and, most importantly, go outside for a few minutes. A breath of fresh air will wake you up.
  3. Tidy your desk: let’s be honest, working in an untidy setting is not just annoying but also ruins your concentration. A desk littered with objects, paper, pens, and newspapers will not make you a more productive worker, but rather an easy prey to distractions. It’s better to work on an empty desk: then you’ll only focus on what to have to do.
