Why You Should Always Send A Cover Letter

Firstly, if you are applying for a job that requires you to send a cover letter then you should always do so. If you are applying for a job that doesn’t specify sending a cover letter then you should also. So, always send a cover letter.

Cover letters are being sent less and less by people these days. By sending one you are showing you are really putting the effort in and want the job as well as differentiating yourself from the competition.

Write It Like You Would Say It

The best cover letters are conversational cover letters. The rule of thumb is that your CV should be sober and formal whereas your cover letter should be conversational in tone. That does not mean flippant but it should be friendly. It should introduce you as a person along with the reasons why you want to apply for the job.

Keep it Simple And To The Point

Some people advise you to make a story out of your conversational cover letter. This is incorrect, your cover letter needs to be simple and to the point.

Three simple paragraphs should do:

  • Introduction – My name is … and I currently work at …. I recently saw your job advert for the role of … and have enclosed my CV for your consideration.
  • Paragraph 2 – Tell them why you want the job. Be friendly, warm and tell them what you will bring to the organisation.
  • Paragraph 3 – Conclude your letter. Thank them for considering your application, reiterate how interested you are in the role and tell them not to hesitate to get in touch if they want to arrange an interview.

Writing a simple, easy to read conversational cover letter is one of the simplest but most effective ways of ensuring you get an interview for the jobs you are applying for. Not only does it mark you out as a candidate who has taken more time and care than others by actually writing a cover letter, it helps to portray your personality as warm which will always put the odds of you getting an interview in your favour.
