Important questions you should ask during an interview

Interviews aren’t just a one-way process. Just as the company are making sure you are the right person for the job, you must ensure that they are the right company for you. That means asking questions!

Do you know what one of the most refreshing things an interviewer can hear during an interview? A question. It shows that you are an inquisitive candidate who is really serious about the job on offer and is genuinely interested in the role and the company.

1. How long have you worked for the company? What do you like about working here?

This is a brilliant question to ask in an interview and it works on two levels. Firstly, by asking your interviewer this you are getting an insider’s view of the company and it shows you are genuinely interested in the role.

Secondly, you are displaying an interest in them on a professional level by asking for their view and that is always going to be somewhat flattering. People like being asked their expert opinion on things so by asking this, you will really stand out against other candidates.

2. What’s the company work culture like?

Being successful in a new role isn’t just about having the right skills, qualifications and experience. It’s about fitting in, feeling at home and really wanting to come to work every day and do your best.

It’s acknowledged that for people to operate at their best they need to be able to successfully adapt to the company culture. By asking this, you are acknowledging this and showing that you are self-aware and flexible.

3. Do have training and development opportunities on offer?

This question tells the interviewer a number of things. Firstly, that you are someone who doesn’t just want a job but that you are someone who wants a career.

Secondly, it shows that you are looking to stay at the company and develop within it. This makes you an attractive hire as recruitment is an expensive process and they don’t want to have to start the whole process again in a few months.

4. Is there scope to develop my career within the company?

This is a very similar question to the previous one and how’s that you are looking to stay and develop at the company in the long term. Generally, candidates who don’t show passion, desire and the drive to move their career forward aren’t going to be very attractive hires for any company.

5. Is there anything in my interview that you don’t think I’ve covered ?

If there is one question that you should always ask at an interview it should be this one. By asking this at the very end, you are in effect checking that you haven’t missed anything in the interview and if you have, you can have a second chance of explaining it. It also shows that you are serious about the role and really want it.

If you’re not asking any questions during your interview, then you are seriously hampering your chances of impressing your interviewer. Use these and you should dramatically increase your chances of securing your dream role.
