Skype Interview: What to Wear

Job interviews on Skype are becoming increasingly widespread and popular. Due to time constraints, or to reduce costs, companies now like to make initial contact with candidates via telephone interviews or on Skype.

If you have been contacted for a Skype interview, make sure you take it seriously. This kind of interview is as important as one in person and the interviewer will be checking everything: even the way you’re dressed.

What to wear for a Skype interview: 4 tips

  • Look smart but not too smart: don’t appear in pyjamas or a torn t-shirt in the hope that the poor quality of the video will disguise your appearance. At the other extreme, a shirt with tie or bow tie is also overdoing it. Better to opt for a simple shirt and blazer.
  • Trousers: we can all agree that you won’t need to stand up during the video call. The interviewer will probably only be able to see your top half. But never say never! So don’t wear smart clothes above the waist and pyjama bottoms below!
  • Hair: the same applies to men and women. Your hair is part of your appearance, and will be studied carefully during your job interview on Skype. Men should avoid extreme hairstyles or too much gel. If you have long hair, tie it back in a pigtail. Woman should opt for a simple style, and avoid elaborate hairdos or ornaments. Natural look is always the best choice.
  • Hands: our last tip for your Skype interview is don’t appear with chipped nail polish, if you are a woman, or with a disco stamp still visible on the back of your hand. Check everything, as if you were really face to face with someone who could become your future employer.
