Staying Safe on the Job During Pregnancy

Apart from the classic “demanding” professions, there are other potentially unsafe jobs which involve working in uncomfortable positions or lifting heavy loads. These could also include working in harsh climatic conditions or in places where you might inhale chemical fumes. And then there are jobs that involve standing for many hours a day.

In addition to these examples, there are various other types of work that are considered dangerous, including:

  • jobs that require you to work on ladders, and mobile or fixed scaffolding
  • work involving pedal driven or pedal controlled machinery
  • caring for or nursing patients in hospitals for infectious diseases, or those for nervous or mental illnesses
  • work aboard ships, planes, trains, coaches or any other means of transport

These are just some of the jobs considered to be dangerous for pregnant women. Such as laws that offer protection for the rights of pregnant women.

The best solution for expectant mothers doing these types of job is to have a talk with their boss and try to arrange for alternative work during their pregnancy. For example, jobs in research or administration, library work or concierge services carry virtually no element of risk.
