We often hear about job roles related to warehousing or logistics, but before applying for this type of position, how about discovering the differences and similarities between these concepts of warehousing and logistics?

According to the Collins English dictionary, a warehouse is a large building where raw materials or manufactured goods are stored until they are exported to other countries or distributed to shops to be sold. From the same source, logistics is the management of the flow of goods between the point of origin and point of destination to meet customer and corporate requirements. It can be said that they are two different sides of the same coin.

In a general business sense, logistics is the art of the flow of things between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customer requirements. Warehousing is a subset of Logistics.

This type of job definitely requires a passion for everything that is related to processes and very specific flows, in order to keep everything working perfectly.

The technologies that are usually adopted within a warehouse are the following:

Automated storage and retrieval systems
Automated data collection (bar codes, voice technology, RFID)
Warehouse Management Systems

You should also keep in mind that this sector operates 24/7, 365 days a year and supply and demand can alter dramatically in a short space of time, which can impact on the resources required.
