Winter seasonal work: Christmas is coming… with plenty of magic and job opportunities too!
The most magical time of the year is here again… already! Like every December, the magic of Christmas brings with it not just a sense of excitement about the upcoming festivities, but it’s also a time that sees a surge of job openings across plenty of sectors.
Summer may be a distant memory now, but fear not: we forecast a flurry of winter seasonal jobs!
Whether you’re looking for a part-time or full-time job, and whether you have a little or a lot of experience, you can dive into the jobs market to find opportunities. This could be the start of a full-fledged career, or simply a chance to earn some money and start 2022 as you mean to go on.
So let’s take a look at which job vacancies are on the rise in December – all of which you can apply to right now.
Which workers are most in demand during this season?
- Retail staff, because elves aren’t the only ones churning out gifts:
From large department stores to household name chains up and down the country, right down to the boutiques found in smaller towns, December is the month when all fashion and clothing retailers begin stepping up their efforts with extended opening hours, often on Sundays and bank holidays too.
Many of them are scrabbling to find shop assistants, cashiers, warehouse workers, and of course gift wrapping staff.
This sharp rise in searching for staff doesn’t just impact the clothing retail sector: supermarkets, food chains and toy stores are also looking for seasonal staff. And if you really want to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere, don’t miss out on opportunities to work at Christmas markets. Often, these jobs don’t require any previous experience, but they will give you a chance to learn and build up skills that you can leverage for future jobs.
- Hospitality and restaurant staff, because not everyone spends Christmas at home…
After a practically non-existent 2020 season, due to pandemic-related restrictions, this year a lot is being staked on winter tourism. All the tourist destinations are hoping to bounce back this season, starting in early December. People are yearning to escape and get pampered, so hotels, farm stays and catering businesses are all looking for staff for the start of the season: receptionists and hotel staff, chambermaids, bartenders, waiting staff, chefs are some of the most sought-after roles.
- Warehouse staff and drivers, because Father Christmas doesn’t just work with reindeers:
The year’s biggest shopping season kicks off as early as December. Black Friday has had a knock-on effect, and the myriad of discounts and promotions that began in November will continue through to the end of the season with the winter sales. Continuing a consolidated trend, e-commerce will be the leader of the pack in this period, with tens and tens of positions open. In general, logistics, alongside the retail and mass consumer products sector, are experiencing a rise in their workload, requiring warehouse workers, drivers, and staff to pick and package orders.
- Entertainers, activity leaders and Santa’s little helpers, because he needs a rest sometimes too!
We all know that Christmas is, above all, for the children: theme parks get a festive make-over, resorts take on activity leaders again, shops and malls need greeters and promoters to work with Father Christmas. While often no specific experience is required to apply, we recommend you don’t underestimate the hard work it takes. Children can be very demanding customers, and working with them takes patience, good stress management, and a pinch of creativity. Tackling your workdays armed with determination, plenty of good humour and a mental outline of your ‘script’ will help you succeed and overcome any unforeseen mishaps along the way. Often, working with children can be immensely rewarding in the end. In any case, you must remember to be professional even in temporary jobs like these, because at this time of year children are the prime target to win over and build loyalty with families: if they remember you, so will your employer.
