The Best Driving Jobs

If you love driving, you might want to think of a career involving cars. Read on for some driving jobs you might like.

Stunt driver

This is one of the most dangerous driving jobs out there, but if you love the way those stunt drivers burn up the rubber, you might consider this as a career. It’s a very competitive area, with many opportunities, so you’ll have to be competitive.

You’ll have to learn from a professional and go through a long apprenticeship. You will also need to become a member of the Screen Actors Guild. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to work alongside Hollywood stars and travel the world. But you’ll have to start at the bottom.

Professional racing driver

This is definitely the most dangerous driving job, but it’s the dream job of many. Only the most skilled, excellent drivers reach the top ranks of Formula 1, and it costs money and time to get there. First of all, you have to obtain an FIA Super Licence, as well as accumulating 40 points over three years from other motorsport series.

You also require two years of experience in single-seater categories and need to pass a test on the Formula 1 sporting regulations, and 300 kilometres of testing in a Formula One car. But if you get to the top, your earnings can be spectacular.

Taxi driver

Working as a taxi driver, you can usually choose your own hours and often work as your own boss. A great advantage is good knowledge of the areas you will be operating in, and you need to have a driver licence for at least 12 months. You will need to apply to the local council if you are outside London, or to Transport for London if inside London.

Driving instructor

If you’re cool, calm and collected, working as a driving instructor might be ideal for you. You will have to register with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and as an Approved Driving Instructor and pass three more exams before you can begin. You can usually set your own hours and be your own boss, and there is the potential to make decent money, especially if you get highly recommended.

Ambulance Driver

This job combines a love of driving with a desire to save people’s lives. To qualify, you will need three or four GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C), including English, Maths and a Science, as well as excellent driving skills. A first aid certificate is recommended, as is experience working with patient care. It’s demanding both physically and emotionally as you have to work long hours with people whose lives are in danger. But it can be enormously rewarding too. You could also use this job as a stepping stone to becoming a paramedic.

Mechanic

If you love cars and taking things apart, a motor mechanic might be the career for you. The best thing: being able to test drive all those cars.
