What to leave off your CV

When elaborating your CV you should include all those elements that can be the reflexion of all your qualities and skills, but adding a value to all of them, in a concise and easy way to understand.

A CV, no matter what the format, should be a coherent expression of your professional, educational and personal background. In order to convey a clear and representative view of yourself to recruiters, you should focus on what to include and what to leave off.

Here you are some things that you should definitely leave out:

  • Irrelevant working experience
  • False information
  • Inconsistent formatting
  • An unprofessional email address
  • Company-specific jargon
  • Social media links not related to the position
  • Annoying buzzwords
  • Opinions rather than facts

When elaborating your CV you should include all those elements that can reflect your qualities and skills, but add value to all of them, in a way that is concise and easy to understand. Keep in mind that recruiters receive a significant number of resumes, and decide within the first few seconds if they should stop and consider your profile.

Choose the best format to create your CV, one that you think can truly represent you and at the same time has the right appeal for a recruiter; it should be balanced (not too simple and not too complex).

Another aspect that should be taken into consideration is grammar: one of the biggest CV killers is poor grammar, not only because recruiters might consider you to be careless, but also because it makes reading the CV harder for the person evaluating your profile. So make sure you proofread your CV many times before sending it, or ask a trusted person to read it.

Remember to keep it simple and never highlight negative facts, because these are generally considered too personal and not objective enough. Keep things simple, real and true.
